What is a VAT Invoice? UK Requirements (2026)

A VAT invoice is a legal document issued by a VAT-registered business to another business or individual. HMRC requires specific information on every VAT invoice to make it valid for VAT reclaiming purposes.

📋 Who needs to issue a VAT invoice?

Any UK business registered for VAT must issue a VAT invoice when supplying goods or services to another VAT-registered business. The VAT registration threshold for 2026 is £90,000 taxable turnover.

⏱️ When must a VAT invoice be issued?

HMRC requires VAT invoices to be issued within 30 days of the supply date — the date you delivered the goods or completed the service. Failure to issue on time can result in penalties.

💡 Simplified VAT invoices

For supplies under £250 (including VAT), you can issue a simplified VAT invoice which requires fewer details. This is common for retail transactions. Source: HMRC GOV.UK.
