Transparency & Accuracy

How Our VAT Calculator Works

Full transparency on the formulas, data sources, and methodology used by VATCalculatorUK.com — so you can trust every calculation for your UK business.

The HMRC Formulas We Use

All calculations on this site use the exact formulas specified by HMRC for UK VAT. There is no rounding at intermediate steps — we calculate to full precision and display to 2 decimal places.

Adding VAT (standard 20%)

Gross = Net × 1.20

e.g. £1,000 × 1.20 = £1,200

Removing VAT (reverse calculation)

Net = Gross ÷ 1.20

e.g. £1,200 ÷ 1.20 = £1,000

General formula (any rate)

Gross = Net × (1 + rate/100)

Works for 20%, 5%, and 0%

Our VAT Rate Sources

All VAT rates used on this site are sourced directly from HMRC GOV.UK and updated whenever HMRC announces changes.
